CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE

Access to reliable contraception is an essential part of basic health care for women. It prevents unintended pregnancies and enables women to control the timing and spacing of their pregnancies, which in turn reduces the incidence of maternal mortality, low birth weight babies, and infant mortality.

Yet over half a century after birth control first became available for women, many women - and in particular low-income women - still lack adequate access to the most effective birth control method for their circumstances and medical needs. Health plans continue to exclude coverage of contraceptive drugs and devices, even while they include coverage of other prescription drugs and devices and a range of preventive health care services. In addition, despite federal and state laws that mandate coverage of prescription contraception in health insurance plans, there are employers and insurers that still fail to provide coverage of all FDA-approved forms of contraception.
