35th Anniversary Press Packet
June 23, 2007, marks the 35th anniversary of the landmark Title IX legislation. The law mandates equal opportunity for girls and women in all areas of education, including school athletics. Since Title IX became law, girls' and women's participation in athletics has increased exponentially. Yet despite these tremendous gains, girls and women still lack equal opportunities to participate in sports. And even when they do receive opportunities to play, girls and women are often subject to inferior treatment.
The National Women's Law Center is committed to leveling the playing field for girls and women. It has been at the forefront of the fight to preserve Title IX and ensure equal opportunities for all students regardless of sex. The materials that the Center is releasing will help to realize Title IX's promise of gender equity in education.
