Leveling the Playing Field
Title IX Promises Equity for Girls in Sports
The National Women’s Law Center is committed to leveling the playing field for girls and women. It has been at the forefront of the fight to preserve Title IX and promote equal opportunities for all students regardless of sex. The materials that the Center is releasing are designed to ensure that Title IX’s promise of gender equity in education becomes a reality.
Since Title IX became law in 1972, girls’ and women’s participation in athletics has increased exponentially. But despite these tremendous gains, girls and women still lack equal opportunities to participate in sports. And even when they do get opportunities to play, girls and women are often subject to inferior treatment.
www.FairPlayNow.org is an NWLC campaign with coalition partners to increase compliance with Title IX in K-12 athletics programs by providing students, parents, coaches, advocates, and attorneys with the tools they need to hold their schools accountable for gender equity on the playing fields.
Barriers to Fair Play: This new Center report examines 416 athletics complaints filed with or resolved by the Office for Civil Rights over the last five years. The report reveals that 35 years after enactment of Title IX, women and girls are still given fewer opportunities than males to participate in sports, and, when they do play, are treated like second-class citizens in the benefits and amenities they receive.
Breaking Down Barriers: This new and comprehensive manual takes a step-by-step approach to educate those subject to discrimination in athletics, as well as their advocates and attorneys, on how to protect their rights under Title IX.
Memorandum to Interested Parties From The Mellman Group: This memorandum details the results of a national survey of 1,000 likely voters. It shows that the public overwhelmingly supports Title IX and those who take action to protect their rights.
Testimony of Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President, National Women’s Law Center, before the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness of the House Committee on Education and Labor, June 19, 2007: In this hearing on the progress made and steps still to be taken under Title IX, the Center’s Co-President testified about the pervasive barriers girls and women still face in sports and the failure of the Office for Civil Rights to adequately enforce the law.
