The Thinking Woman's Guide to the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings
Beginning July 13, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The hearings are critically important in learning more about Judge Sotomayor and her legal perspectives. They also offer a unique opportunity for our nation to consider some of the key legal rights at stake for women, including the right to privacy, equal protection under the law, antidiscrimination protections, affirmative action, health and safety regulations, and more.
Join Us At the Hearings
We will be at the hearings and listening carefully. Many of the key legal protections upon which women have relied for many years are gravely at risk – hanging in the balance of power on the Court. Every new Justice on the Court will likely have a tremendous impact on women’s legal rights for decades to come.
We hope you will listen too, and engage others in talking about the discussions about the important issues at stake for women. Here’s what you can do:

Consider and discuss: The decisions the Supreme Court make have a real impact our lives every day. The Court’s rulings have protected students from sexual harassment in the schools, established the right to use contraceptives, helped women make inroads to police departments and fire stations around the country, and given girls equal opportunity to participate in educational programs. How have the right to privacy, the right to equal protection, anti-discrimination laws, affirmative action, and other legal rights and protections expanded opportunities in your life? How would your life be different if the Court were to roll back these rights and protections that many of us take for granted?
