NWLC RELEASES NEW REPORT ON JUDGE SOTOMAYOR’S LEGAL RECORD AND TESTIMONY

(Washington, DC)  The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) today released a report, available at www.nwlc.org/pdf/SotomayorReport.pdf, which addresses Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s 17-year judicial record, her legal experience and activities, her speeches, and her four days of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Based on her record and her testimony NWLC fully supports her nomination and urges her swift confirmation.

The following is a statement by Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President of NWLC:

“Judge Sotomayor possesses sterling academic and legal credentials. Her varied legal career includes government service as a prosecutor, private practice in complex areas of commercial law, and seventeen years as a federal judge both on the trial and appellate level. If confirmed to replace Justice Souter, she will be the only sitting Justice with trial court experience.

“In addition to her exceptional legal qualifications, Judge Sotomayor brings an inspiring life story reflecting her great intelligence and legal capacity, and a demonstrated commitment to public and community service, including within the civil rights community. Further, if confirmed, she would be the first Latina and woman of color, and only the third woman and the third person of color, to sit on the Supreme Court—thereby not only in a position to make history on the Court, but also poised to bring new perspectives and experiences to enrich the Court’s deliberations.

“NWLC’s review of Judge Sotomayor’s legal record and testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee revealed that she is an impressive judge who is deeply respectful of legal precedent, carefully articulates the legal precedents that she is following, and anchors her decisions in the details of the specific factual record. This careful and thoughtful record reflects her fairness, open mind, and willingness to fully apply the hard-won legal rights upon which women rely.

“Judge Sotomayor will bring a real-world perspective, much-needed diversity of experience and background, and impressive legal acumen to the Court. The National Women’s Law Center offers its strong support of Judge Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court, and urges the Committee and then the full Senate to approve her nomination quickly.”
