TIME TO GET REFORM DONE

(Washington, DC)  The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) commends President Obama for reaffirming his firm commitment to passing meaningful health care reform legislation this year in his speech earlier this evening.

The following is a statement by Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President of NWLC:

“President Obama’s speech marked an important milestone in what has become a historic journey toward meaningful health care reform. After decades of pushing for health care reform that meets the needs of women and their families, we are closer than ever to comprehensive, quality, affordable health care for all.

“For every day that passes without action being taken, more women are forced to make impossible choices: between paying the electric bill and taking their children to a pediatrician, between putting food on their family’s table and buying their prescription drugs, between losing their home and losing their battle with cancer.

“Census data to be released tomorrow will likely confirm what many already know first hand: that increasing numbers of Americans are joining the ranks of the uninsured at great risk to their health and financial security.

“Women and their families can’t wait any longer for our elected leaders to fix our broken health care system. They urgently need health care reform that addresses the specific challenges women face in getting access to affordable care, that ends discriminatory insurance practices such as gender rating, and that provides women access to the full range of services they need to live healthy lives, including maternity coverage.

“Tonight, President Obama eloquently and clearly spelled out what is at stake for the nation. Congress should put aside politics and do what’s right for women and their families. It’s time to get health care reform done.”
