The Issues
The Citi Education Series on Family Economic Security at the National Women's Law Center covers topics that are vital to women and families. Current areas of focus include:
- Family Tax Credits. Tax credits can help increase a family's income by lowering their taxes and, in some cases, giving cash refunds.
- Dropout Prevention. Girls are dropping out of high school at dangerously high rates — and facing devastating economic consequences. Implementing targeted strategies to reduce dropout rates can make a difference in the lives of girls across the country.
- Career and Technical Education. Girls are significantly less likely than boys to enroll in traditionally male career and technical education courses that can lead to higher-paying jobs, but steps can be taken to encourage more girls to enter and complete these classes.
- Child Support. This vital source of income helps many families escape poverty and provide for their children's needs.
- Retirement Security. Without Social Security benefits, more than half of all women 65 and older would be poor. As a result, retirement security is especially important to women.
