Media Manager (Bilingual Speaker)

The Position

Every day the National Women’s Law Center receives a high volume of time-sensitive requests from print, radio, TV, and online outlets on a broad range of issues that Law Center covers.  The Press Team is seeking an energetic, creative, and detail-oriented candidate for the role of Media Manager. The Media Manager will coordinate, engage with, and prioritize seeking Spanish-speaking media to cover NWLC’s issue areas, and will also manage a portfolio of issue-based media work, including but not limited to an equitable judiciary, executive nominations, voting rights, and racial justice.

The organization attributes its impressive track record of securing extensive press coverage to its ability to respond quickly to reporters’ needs and tight deadlines, and to be able to tell the stories related to gender justice with clarity, innovation, and accuracy. This role will play a key part as a member of the Marketing and Communications team.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively reach out to, and serve as the frontline responder for, all Spanish-language press;
  • Develop and execute an outreach plan to Spanish-speaking media to cover NWLC’s issues including identifying new audiences and the outlets they read, determining new angles for NWLC stories, and closing the loop by pitching stories to those outlets;
  • Field portfolio-related press requests quickly, connecting reporters with relevant staff and/or partners;
  • Schedule interviews with appropriate in-house experts and set up prep sessions before the interviews are conducted;
  • Manage a portfolio of issue-based work which could include drafting and editing press releases, media alerts, statements and as needed, OpEds;
  • Manage background for and live interview prep as needed;
  • Support creation and management of NWLC’s overall press strategy.

Qualifications

  • A candidate must possess a minimum of two years’ experience specifically in communications and press management.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Experience and judgment working both collaboratively and independently.
  • Demonstrates calm under pressure, especially in rapid response environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, work well with competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with media management systems such as Vocus, Cision and Meltwater.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working on gender and racial equity and centering communities of color in their approach to work and executing key responsibilities.

Additional preferred skills and knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required.
  • Sense of humor and ability to work across a large interdisciplinary team, and across a multi-issue organization;
  • Understanding of the media landscape, news, and pop culture moments;
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a diverse, inclusive, collaborative team setting.

Key Relations

The Media Manager will report directly to the Director of Media Relations and work with other members of the Press Team as well as the Marketing and Communications team and staff across the organization.

Classification

NWLC recognizes a staff bargaining unit, NWLC United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in NWLC’s bargaining unit. Specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.

Compensation & Benefits

A minimum salary of $83,000 will be provided to the successful candidate who has a minimum of 2 years’ experience directly relevant to this role, consistent with the National Women’s Law Center’s compensation framework.

The Center offers a comprehensive benefits package, and four weeks of annual vacation.

NWLC is a non-profit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C., with our office located in historic Dupont Circle. However, due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, all NWLC staff are temporarily working remotely. We continue to monitor public health guidance and keep safety, science, and flexibility top of mind as we evaluate what reopening looks like for our team.
