This is one of the key rationales underneath the Affordable Care Act: to ensure that women aren't discriminated by health insurance pricing practices that have been common in the industry. TIME magazine put this in the category of a "woman tax," where females have paid more for many consumer goods, including but not limited to deodorant, haircuts and sneakers.
