Senate Lets Down Millions of Working Women and Families by Failing to Move Paycheck Fairness Bill Forward

June 5, 2012

(Washington, D.C.) Today, in an 52-47 vote, the Senate failed to get the 60 needed votes to invoke cloture to end a filibuster on the Paycheck Fairness Act.  In 2010, this bill passed the House with a bipartisan vote, but in a party-line vote did not overcome a filibuster in the Senate.

Analysis by the National Women’s Law Center of jobs data for May 2012 released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in a month in which the economy added just 69,000 net jobs, women gained 95,000 jobs while men lost 26,000 jobs.  May was the second largest monthly job gain for women in the last twelve months.  However, during the recovery overall

(Washington, D.C.) Today the House held a procedural vote on whether to move forward with the Paycheck Fairness Act. The House voted 233-180 against taking up the bill. In 2011 this bill passed the House with a bipartisan vote and was two votes shy of overcoming a filibuster in the Senate.

Analysis by the National Women’s Law Center of jobs data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that women gained 73 percent of the 115,000 jobs added in April—the largest share of monthly job gains for women since the start of the recovery. For the recovery overall (June 2009-April 2012), women’s gains have been much smaller.
