Announcing Blog to Rally for Girls' Sports Day 2010

December 8th will mark Rally for Girls' Sports Day, celebrating the importance of girls in sports and the far-reaching benefits of athletics participation for girls nationwide.

We're asking bloggers and tweeters to promote equal opportunities for girls to participate in school sports programs by posting about this important issue on Rally for Girls' Sports Day. Please sign up to Blog to Rally for Girls’ Sports, and show support for girls in sports!

The idea behind our Blog to Rally for Girls' Sports Day is simple: "What did you win by playing sports?" You can use this theme to begin discussing what the chance to participate in athletics programs meant to you and/or your daughter and how it has affected your lives.

Some things to keep in mind as you’re writing:
Research has repeatedly shown that participation in sports has many benefits for young women. For example, participation in sports decreases girls' chances of becoming obese and developing heart disease, osteoporosis, and breast cancer. Female athletes have higher levels of self-esteem, a lower incidence of depression and a more positive body image than non-athletes. Girls who play sports have higher grades, better test scores, and are less likely to drop out. They also have more opportunities to apply for athletic scholarships, which can help them attend college. Female athletes are also more likely to participate in traditionally male-dominated occupations, which are typically higher paying. In addition, more than four out of five executive businesswomen played sports growing up, and the vast majority reported that the lessons they learned on the playing field contributed to their success in business. By playing sports, girls win more than a game.

Raise awareness about the importance of providing girls with equal chances to reap the benefits of sports and sign up for the Blog to Rally for Girls’ Sports Day on December 8th here. You can also download a graphic for your post on the sign-up page.

Played in College - now both of my Kids Play in College!

Ah - sports! The foundation for confidence later in life if you accomplish either music, art or athletics. My older two brothers and seven younger siblings were all the push I needed for sports! I always competed with them so in the end competition became second nature. It was healthy and it caused all of us to want to excel. In college, I played on an Intramural Soccer Team that eventually became a Varsity spot. The Men's team had financing but the women's team - not so much. Title Nine hadn't caught up yet but soon afterwards.
I recognized the athletic talents in both my children early on and exposed them to a variety of sports to see where their talents shined. My son plays lacrosse in college while studying at a great business school and my daugher plays soccer (full ride) studying communications with the hopes of professional play and maybe coaching. Keeping the eye on the ball and never doubting that college was in their sites helped them both. Also, recognizing that sports offers support beyond financial in the college arena was important as well. I can't believe how much enjoyment my husband and I receive watching them play! We drive 6 hours to a game to turn around and drive back again in the same day that tells you something!
Whether we're skiing, playing soccer in a coed league, or boogie boarding at the beach - sports binds us as a family as it did for me as a child playing sports with my family. For athletic people - it's what we do and girls are just as capable as boys!

I looove playin sports! I'm a girl but I play in a mainly all guys basketball league. I don't care about gender issues because when im on the floor I just care about the game! Basketball is the best and playing sports can really set you up for success! Playing sports doesn't just teach you yea let's get a win, it teaches you about teamwork, leadership, setting goals and following through, and most importantly, as a teen, it teaches you to dream!

Girls in Sport

I have a son and a daughter and each play a range of sports. Girls need to be encouraged to be competitive which would help them stick with a sport. There is a high drop out rate amongst girls. Being involved with sport also helps to combat childhood obesity which is becoming a real problem in Ireland.

Girls sports provide growth opportunities for the indivdual . Sports provides competition ,physical activity, opportunities for scholorships, taking care of physical health helps take care of mental health.  Girls sports teach team work, sportsmanship. And very important....it empowers girls in so many ways, from belief that girls can't or shouldn't achieve.
