Dear Fox News, Women Should NOT Pay More for Health Insurance

Some of the commentators in this news clip make the argument that women should pay more than men for the same health insurance. The argument goes something like this: women need things like mammograms, and pap tests, and their bodies are different, so they should pay more for health insurance.

Does that seem fair?

We did the research and the fact is that women are charged more for health coverage simply because they are women. In states that have not prohibited the practice of “gender rating” the vast majority of plans in the individual market charge women more. In fact, 92%, of best-selling plans in the individual market gender rate—for example, charging 40-year-old women more than 40-year-old men for coverage. What’s more is that health plans often exclude coverage for services that only women need, like maternity care. So women are buying coverage that does not cover all their health care needs and paying more than men for that coverage. And, they are not just paying a little more; they are paying a lot more. Gender rating costs women approximately $1 billion a year.

Does that seem fair?

Yes, women access more preventive services, as the commentators point out. But shouldn’t all of us get the preventive care we need to get and stay healthy? Why should women be discriminated against for simply going to the doctor?

Furthermore, our research shows a wide variation in the differences women are charged both within and across states—even with maternity care excluded. For example, one plan examined in Arkansas charges 25-year-old women 81% more than men for coverage while a similar plan in the same state only charges women 10% more for coverage than men. Neither plan covers maternity care. It’s hard to justify or explain that variation.

Fortunately, starting soon in January 2014, this unfair and discriminatory practice ends.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (AKA Obamacare) women cannot be charged more than men for the same health insurance. Finally. Now, that seems fair to us!

car insurance

With car insurance, women pay less! It's not just for DUIs. Women are the worst violators of cell phone use in the car. So often I've seen women in huge vans driving and "chatting". anyways, i am a male and just pay $50/month for auto coverage thru 4autoinsurancequote , so it's fine with me!

Big deal

I pay more for car insurance because I'm a man. This is the exact same thing.

Preventative care

Hmm... I wonder if it would be different if we put a race spin on it. African Americans are more susceptible to all kinds of disease, but do we charge them more for being black? I thought not. Also, to say women cost more in preventative care is a generalization. I am female and RARELY see a doctor. So maybe it should be placed on a history basis such as car insurance for good drivers. Of course then if someone got cancer (something out of their control) then they would just have to pay more, right? Because they deserve it? Hmm.. that's what they seem to be saying about females at least.

Bias...

I'm only making a comment because I see that those that have commented, are men. Not women, men. Your opinion matters of course but it's the fact that our country is trying to become Equal with everything it does. Does a man still make more money? Yes. Does a man still pay more for car insurance? Yes. Those things will eventually become their own law in their own right. When it comes to a woman posting a comment about this topic, most people would shun her. We women hardly have a voice anymore. I understand that we may cost more because of having body parts that men don't, but men have body parts we don't and also have to get some sort of doctor visit around that body part. The doctor's we women visit are trying to catch cancer early on and make sure we women can actually child bare. Which many people seem to forget that not all women can even have children. Those that can, have to pay a fortune because the premium of health insurance is too high for them to really even pay; but they do because they know their unborn baby or reproductive health need to be in top shape and not have anything wrong with it. What they really need to focus on are the people who really can't afford to pay the bills back from the hospital, if they have a child. Those people are the teenagers. A lot of them don't have health insurance, i know I didn't when I was a teenager but I never had a child. I've heard from many young women that it was hard to pay the bills back. Maybe in some way they can lower the premium rate of every woman because a lot of these women are living in poverty. Sometimes I don't think people think about that either. I mean think about it, you have a wife that's pregnant, her health insurance didn't cover her pregnancy so she has to pay out of pocket. The bills pile after she gives birth to over 50,000. What do you do in that situation? You have to figure out how to pay for it and it's trouble some in this day and age to pay for something that expensive. Granted I would find myself a health insurance that covered the expenses, all of them, just so I knew I wouldn't have to pay any of the bills. Which the Obamacare is making it easier for women to obtain health insurance so they are able to see the doctor's they need. I do agree they need to raise the percentage a few for women because we do require more services but they shouldn't make it nearly impossible for them to be able to pay. That would be doing something that is already being done.

Reminer of what discrimination actually means

It seems like some commentators forgot what discrimination actually means - it means treating people differently based on parts of their identity that are our of their control including (but not limited to) race, age AND sex. If you choose to view being female as (A) something that is out of a person's control (which it obviously is), then charging women more for coverage is discrimination no doubt. Or (B) Like the Dr in the video, you view being female as a sort of 'pre-condition' that should allow insurance companies to pay more for your coverage than basically you are saying they can also charge more of people with other pre-conditions like history of cancer in the family or genetic predisposition to get Parkinson's or Huntigton's disease (which are, by the way, also things that are out of a person's control) . If you tend to agree with the Dr in the video, you should probably check what skeletons you have in your genetic closet before you advocate for women to pay more for coverage.

The truth about abortion

We are led to believe that abortion was legalized beause of "womens right to privacy but women waive their rights to privacy when they cohabit, buy licences or permits or file tax returns or get help with abortion.
The Federal Reserve said in 1979 that their sys-tem "works (us) only with credit" that would keep its value "if there were fewer people bidding against each other,"--Keeping Our Money (their credit) Healthy--pub Federal Reserve Bank of New York. What would those counterfeiters not do or persuade us to do to see there were fewer people bidding against each other? Did they tell their supreme cult to legalize abortion and tell their congress to subsidize milk, sugar and tobacco, all killers? Did they tell their FDA to forget about the poison in diet soda when they list 93 symptoms of aspartame poisoning? Did they tell bakers to stop putting VITAL iodine in bread and switch to toxic bromine?

Total cost

What missing is the total cost comparison of men and women, not just the preventative cost. If the total cost of health care for one gender is considerably and consistently more than the other, then maybe it's fair to charge more?

your study

I browsed through the document and I didn't catch anything that actually justifies why gender ratings shouldn't occur. Just that they do which everybody already knew anyway. Also men get charged more for auto insurance and nobody cares about that.

Womens Helath Care

Of course women should pay more. What are you thinking? They cost far more so they should pay more. it is you who are gender biased. Others are just logical and rational. And yes women should be paid the same for the same work, which is no related.

Women and health care

You note above that women access more preventive services than men. Agreed. That being the case, if insurance companies are expected to PAY for those services, then naturally women are going to pay more in premiums than men. Nobody is being "discriminated against" unless it is a level playing field and BOTH men and women access the exact same services and all costs are the same-THEN if women are charged more for the same services, it IS discrimination.
