The minimum wage in ten states went up at the beginning of 2013. Rhode Island saw the largest increase of 35 cents per hour thanks to legislation passed in June. Minimum wages in the other nine states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington) increased automatically because they are indexed to inflation, a policy which ensures that the minimum wage keeps pace with the increasing cost of living.
Analysis by the Economic Policy Institute reveals that nearly one million workers will get a raise from these increases. In each state, women are the majority of the workers who will see their wages go up. The impact on women is the largest in Missouri where they are nearly three-quarters of the workers who will benefit from the increased minimum wage. The economies of these states will also benefit — the increase in minimum wages will add nearly $184 million to GDP in 2013.
These increases added some more good news to the victories minimum wage workers saw in the last few months — voters chose to increase the minimum wage in Albuquerque, San Jose, and Long Beach, and a bill to raise New Jersey's minimum wage has made its way to Governor Christie's desk.
Sadly, however, the minimum wage is still falling short for millions of Americans, especially women. Today, a full-time minimum wage worker makes just $14,500 annually — more than $3,600 below the poverty line for a family of three. And because women are two-thirds of minimum wage workers, increasing the minimum wage would also help close the wage gap.
Though state and local measures to raise the minimum wage are positive, a higher federal minimum wage — like the $9.80/hour proposed in the Fair Minimum Wage Act — would give millions more workers a raise and help lift families out of poverty. An increase in the federal minimum wage is essential.

I am like everyone else why don't all the states pass the minimum wage up to 9 bucks an hour, everything else goes up gas, food, living cost should I go on, who ever is behind not passing this does not care about the poor people cause they have money them selfs..well just don't sit on this pass the minimum wage and make a lot of people happy amen that is all I will say, don't pass it and see what happens.

Wage needs to go up
Simply put, the wages need to go up here in Texas, I live in the cheapest place I'v ever been able to find, and after working full time and paying bills, (no car or car payments, cant afford to live like that) im barely left with 200$ for food and just using public transportation is 100$ for a month.. I suppose the American dream is being able to make enough to stay alive now. Seems kinda 3rd world to me.

Minimum Wage for Michigan
I'm wondering when will minimum wage go up for the state of Michigan. I myself make minimum wage but it's not enough I have 2 teens and a pre teen, plus I take care of my husband. Michigan has suffered and lost so much in terms of jobs and money. We truly need minimum wage raised it would really help a lot of families.

Minimum wage in Georgia
We're desperate for this in Georgia where minimum wage by State law is only $5, if it weren't for a Federal minimum wage forcing it up we would be starving to death.

I do have to agree with on wages in GA i am a waitress and i only make $2.28 an hour and the tips I that make is only enough for gas to get to work to make the same thing again. Thank God my husband works he only make 7.50 but it pays the bills

Ok our government is the crooks they stael from us every day we work they complain about the us debt but us fellow americans didnt put our selves there they di...they want to arrest the bank robbers,drug dealers,ect... when they need to arrest them selves for doing the same things. They need to raise the wages so we can better our selves and live not in poverty but in comfort and stability we run the country we have the say so its our freedom well what we have left they need to treat us like they are being treated....let our house and senate take care of our debt and live in poverty like wedo andthen maybe they will see how it is if you combineall of their money you could easily pay off a quarter to a third of national debt.

problem with this...
Yeah, it would be nice for minimum wage to increase but what about the pockets of the business owners. Do you think they are going to cut their paychecks just to make sure that we have it a little better? I don't, they will just pass the increase in wages to the customer...inevitably that is you. I don't know what we can do to bridge the gap and make life easier but I don't think minimum wage increases will be the answer. Oh yeah don't forget about the health insurance that we have to purchase. We will also have more in taxes taken out of each paycheck. The increase in minimum wage might just help us break even again, that is if we are talking about almost 10.00 an hour. I don't think there is going to be any sigh of relief just yet.
