I am happy to report that we have a fact sheet on women in the federal judiciary that needs updating: Yesterday, the Senate confirmed Susan Carney, deputy general counsel of Yale University, to a seat on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by a bipartisan vote of 71-28. Nineteen Republican Senators voted in favor of her nomination, which was first made almost exactly a year ago. Despite the fact that there were 17 appellate court vacancies prior to her confirmation — and four other appellate court nominees ready for a vote — Carney is only the third circuit court nominee to be confirmed in 2011. She is the first woman ever to be confirmed to a Connecticut-based seat on the Second Circuit, and with her confirmation, four of the twelve active judges on the Second Circuit are women.
