Senate May Vote Tonight: Make Sure They Put Teachers Back to Work Now

Last week, Senate Republican leaders blocked debate on the full American Jobs Act. So President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) are trying to move the jobs agenda one piece at a time. And they're starting with a measure that is especially important to women.

The Senate could vote as early as tonight on whether to allow debate to begin on the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act. Call 1-888-847-0941 NOW and ask your Senators to support the Act!

When connected to your Senators' offices, please tell them:

  • Your name, where you are from, and that you are a constituent.
  • That you're counting on them to support the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act to keep teachers in the classroom and police and firefighters on the job.
  • That you support paying for these vital investments with a small surtax on incomes over $1 million.

After you place your call, please call back to be connected to the office of your other Senator.

The Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act would provide $30 billion to protect or create jobs for nearly 400,000 teachers and $5 billion to keep thousands of local police and firefighters on the job. It would be fully paid for by a surtax of one-half of one percent on income above $1 million.

The Act is especially important to women because women hold three-quarters of local education jobs — and 255,000 local education jobs have been lost since June 2009. These layoffs, which are continuing, are a blow to the economic security of women and their families and the educational opportunities of millions of students.

Please call 1-888-847-0941 today and ask your Senators to support the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act!

Jobs for Teachers and First Responders

President Obama's Jobs Bill should never have been broken into pieces. The American voters and organizations which keep the public informed are watching. We want to know who among our legislators is truly representing our interests, not the interests of the wealthy. Stop pandering to greed. Many of you are doing the wrong things, going along with what is wrong in the name of partisan politics.

We demand you stand up for teachers, firemen and police -- get these Americans back to work! Then, ladies and gentlemen, turn your attention to making unified effort for all American workers and our communities. We need jobs. Our neighborhoods need us -- the nation needs us! We promise you we will get out and vote to keep healthier, better educated, safer, communities.
