Taking Part in Supreme Court History

By Marcia Greenberger, Co-President,
National Women's Law Center

Sometimes history is made by taking one more step toward making the extraordinary ordinary.

Yesterday, I was honored to be part of a momentous time in the Supreme Court's history and that of our nation by testifying in support of Solicitor General Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Court. Once she is confirmed, three women will serve together on the Court for the first time. Elena Kagan also will be only the fourth women to serve on the highest court in the land in its 221 years of existence.

Elena Kagan is a remarkable woman worthy of enthusiastic support. She possesses sterling academic and legal credentials, has dedicated her life to public service, and has demonstrated her support of the constitutional and legal rights upon which women rely. The record shows that she supports the core principles of Roe v. Wade. And on the issue of sex discrimination, Elena Kagan’s record shows that she has worked to ensure that women’s hard-won legal protections against discrimination whether at work and at school, or far beyond, are truly available.

Our country's history is that of barriers being broken, of remarkable individuals being the first, to be followed by seconds and thirds, and finally of reaching a point where the additions are no longer noted. It is in keeping with the proud tradition of this country to have such an impressive and accomplished woman as Elena Kagan nominated to join the two other distinguished women Justices currently on the Supreme Court. Each is a testament to the fact that the country is stronger and better when it can benefit from the talents of us all.

Thank you for continuing to work with us to expand the legal rights of women and their families.
