Since Title IX became law in 1972, we have worked hard to ensure that women and girls are treated fairly in athletics programs—from challenging schools to provide female athletes with equal access to athletic opportunities, to fighting efforts to weaken enforcement of Title IX protections for women and girls.

This fact sheet describes areas of focus for schools in order to ensure that all girls have access to a safe and healthy school environment that is conducive to learning.   Schools should address the needs of at-risk girls, including pregnant and parenting students, foster girls' athletic opportunities, protect girls from bullying and harassment, use positive, evidence-based approaches to discipline, provide comprehensive and medically-accurate sex education, and ensure transparency, in order to engage parents and the community members.

press release | Center Files Title IX Complaints Against 12 School Districts

(Washington, DC)--The National Women's Law Center (NWLC) today filed administrative complaints against 12 school districts across the country for failing to provide high school girls with equal opportunities to play sports in violation of Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs.

To address the discrimination in athletics that girls still face in high schools nationwide, the National Women's Law Center launched the Rally for Girls' Sports: She'll Win More Than a Game campaign, which features advocacy and outreach to parents and other adults. The campaign also includes the filing of administrative complaints against twelve school districts across the country for failing to provide girls with equal opportunities to play sports, in violation of Title IX.
