Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is an FDA-approved form of contraception that prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex, birth control failure, or sexual assault. It is also known as the "morning-after pill." Access to emergency contraception has increased, but barriers to this safe and effective method of pregnancy prevention remain. We're working to ensure that women have access to emergency contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy.

During debate on the Continuing Resolution for fiscal year 2011, the House adopted an amendment offered by Representative Mike Pence (R-IN) that would take all federal funds away from Planned Parenthood clinics. This targeted amendment puts the health of millions of low and middle-income women at risk by eliminating their primary source of preventive health care and family planning services. Not only would this amendment eliminate the provision of cancer screenings and other vital health services for women, but it represents a direct attack by Members of Congress on women’s ability to control their own reproductive health.

Fact Sheet | Gingrey H.R. 1 Amendment Will Make It Harder for Low-Income Women to Obtain Access to Contraceptives

Representative Phil Gingrey (R-GA) has filed an amendment to H.R. 1 that would prevent the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) from implementing a provision of the Affordable Care Act that made it easier for states to make more women eligible for family planning services under Medicaid and guaranteed that all new benchmark plans covered family planning services. Known as the Medicaid Family Planning State Option, this provision has already expanded access to family planning services for women in several states—and has the potential to help even more.
