Minimum Wage

Women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers — and full-time, year-round work at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour leaves a woman with two children thousands of dollars below the poverty line. We're working to raise the minimum wage and tipped minimum wage at the federal level and in the states to boost women's economic security and help close the wage gap.

Fact Sheet | The 10 Largest Jobs Paying Under $10.10/Hour Are Majority Women

Women are the majority of workers in each of the ten largest occupations that typically pay less than $10.10 per hour, and about two-thirds or more of the workers in seven of these occupations. Increasing the minimum wage and tipped minimum wage are key steps toward fair pay for women.

Each year, millions of workers are paid the minimum wage and rely on these wages to support themselves and their families.  But the federal miniumum wage hasn't increased since 2007 and the tipped minimum wage hasn't increased since 1991. Increasing the federal minimum wage and the tipped minimum is vital for women who made up about two-thirds of all workers who earned minimum wage or less in 2010.

Coalition Action Materials | Women's Organizations Support Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012

July 11, 2012

The National Women's Law Center joined with over 40 women's organizations to support the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012. The Act would raise the minimum wage incrementally to $9.80 per hour in 2014, would raise the tipped minimum wage to 70 percent of the minimum wage, and index both to inflation.
