Celebrities Lampoon Outrageous Comments on Reproductive Health Care in New Video from This Is Personal Campaign
Aisha Tyler, Lizzy Caplan, Jason Alexander and others star in new video at thisispersonal.org
October 25, 2012Washington D.C. – Today, This Is Personal, a campaign lead by the National Women’s Law Center, released a new video featuring celebrities Lizzy Caplan, Aisha Tyler, Tig Notaro, Kali Hawk, Annabeth Gish, Jessica St. Claire, Erin Foley, Andrea Savage and Jason Alexander riffing on outrageous statements by public figures intent on restricting women’s ability to make reproductive health decisions. The new video highlights some of the more outlandish quotes by public figures that underscore the threats to reproductive health care–-including a statement that women can’t get pregnant in the case of “legitimate rape” and a politician’s belief that “artificial birth control is both unnatural and immoral.”
This Is Personal™ launched in September to educate young women about the growing threat to their reproductive health and to encourage them to take action to keep deeply personal decisions about birth control and abortion in their hands. Since the launch a little over four weeks ago, the campaign has grown exponentially, enlisting close to 300,000 women to join its email advocacy and social media channels, including more than 180,000 followers on Facebook alone.
“It comes down to this: decisions about birth control and abortion are extremely personal and should be made by a woman with her family, doctor and faith,” said This Is Personal campaign director Thao Nguyen. “What’s more, these attacks on women’s reproductive health go beyond just birth control—they’re trying to restrict our access to critical services like cancer and STI screenings and sex education. At the end of the day, what a politician thinks should not trump a woman’s ability to take care of her health.”
With a growing base of young women advocates, This Is Personal is equipping women with the facts and tools they need to understand what is currently at stake and how they can act – by joining the conversation online, talking with their friends and writing their legislators – to ensure these deeply personal decisions remain theirs to make. And with the 40th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision approaching in January, the campaign is underscoring the need for young women to raise their voices and join the fight to keep decisions about birth control and abortion personal.
