House of Representatives to Vote on "Dangerous and Unconstitutional" D.C. Abortion Ban
(Washington, D.C.) This evening, the House of Representatives is slated to vote on H.R. 3803. This bill, also known as the “D.C. Abortion Ban,” would ban almost all abortions in Washington, D.C. for women starting at 20 weeks after fertilization, with no exceptions for rape, incest or to protect a woman’s health.
The following statement is from Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President of the National Women’s Law Center:
“With only a few days left until the House of Representatives adjourns for its August recess, it is shameful that some members of Congress are prioritizing intrusions into women’s personal medical decisions and reproductive health care. Adding insult to injury, this time they are targeting women with no voting representation in Congress.
“This dangerous and unconstitutional bill is a direct attack on women’s reproductive rights as established in Roe v. Wade and tramples on the autonomy of D.C. citizens. It follows an onslaught of attacks in the House on reproductive health that aim to deny women access to needed care, from attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, to 33 congressional votes to repeal or defund the landmark health care law, to legislation that would require doctors to racially profile women seeking an abortion.
“The National Women’s Law Center urges the House of Representatives to vote against the D.C. abortion ban and end these unconscionable attacks on the women of our nation’s capital.”
