National Women's Law Center Commends Final Rule on Contraceptive Coverage

Final rule will ensure that millions of women have access to the health care they need

June 28, 2013

(Washington, D.C.) Earlier today, the Obama Administration announced the final rule on accommodations for non-profit organizations with religious objections to the contraceptive coverage provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA requires all new health insurance plans to cover contraceptives and other preventive health services with no co-pay or deductible.

The following statement is from National Women’s Law Center Vice President of Health & Reproductive Rights Judy Waxman:

“The National Women’s Law Center commends the Administration’s commitment to ensuring women are able to get the birth control they need, as promised in the ACA, no matter where they work. Nearly every woman will use birth control at some point in her life.

“The rule finalizes an accommodation for non-profit religious organizations like hospitals and universities. Women will be notified by their insurance company that they are eligible to receive contraceptive coverage at no additional cost, even though their employer will not be paying for it.

“The bottom line is that today’s final rule confirms that millions more women will have access to this basic and essential health care, without interference from their bosses.”
