National Women's Law Center Decries Supreme Court Decision in Shelby County v. Holder
(Washington, D.C.) Today the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, struck down a key section of the Voting Rights Act, which was reauthorized by overwhelming, bipartisan majorities in Congress only seven years ago.
Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), issued the following statement:
“This deeply troubling decision will have a concrete, detrimental impact on voters as jurisdictions erect new, exclusionary barriers to voting. These barriers are likely to particularly harm people of color but also the poor, the elderly, students, and those who have changed their names—groups in which women are disproportionately represented. The National Women’s Law Center calls upon Congress to move quickly to address the ongoing threat of voting discrimination and ensure every necessary protection for the right to vote.”
