NWLC Applauds Senate Vote on Confirmation of Tom Perez for Secretary of Labor

July 18, 2013

(Washington, D.C.) The Senate voted today to confirm Thomas Perez, the current Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, to be the next Secretary of Labor, by a vote of 54 to 46.

“The National Women’s Law Center applauds the Senators who voted to confirm Tom Perez,” said Nancy Duff Campbell, Co-President of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). “Millions of workers around the country rely on the Department of Labor to ensure equal opportunity and protect against discrimination and abuses in the workplace, and today’s vote means that it gains a strong and committed leader to pursue its important mission.”

Tom Perez has the bipartisan support of women’s and civil rights groups, business leaders, law enforcement officials, Latino organizations and disability groups. His experience as the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and as Secretary of Maryland’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation makes him uniquely qualified to lead the U.S. Department of Labor.

“Tom Perez will be a superb Secretary of Labor because he has the experience and the commitment to enforce the federal laws upon which women, and all workers, rely,” said NWLC Co-President Marcia D. Greenberger. “NWLC strongly supported his nomination and looks forward to his beginning the important work of the Department of Labor.”
