Summary
The National Women's Law Center (NWLC) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented intern with an interest in media, public policy, and women’s issues to provide support to NWLC’s Media Office in the Communications Department. A full-time intern will work 37.5 hours per week; a part-time intern must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. The start and end dates of the internship are flexible, but typically they span sometime in September and December 2013.
Intern Duties and Responsibilities
The Media intern will work closely with the Communications team to monitor NWLC news coverage, assemble background information on selected journalists, help identify women who are willing to tell their personal stories that dovetail with the Center’s core issues, and help conduct telephone interviews with these women. The intern will also draft blog posts in response to timely issues in the news and attend selected planning and strategy meetings--which offers an opportunity to learn effective communications approaches.
The NWLC internship program provides students a chance to gain valuable hands-on experience and make professional connections. NWLC hosts monthly brown-bag lunches that feature expert speakers on a broad range of topics.
Successful interns are proactive, seek out assignments, ask questions, and attend events which provide networking opportunities with NWLC staff and others in the field.
Qualifications
Applicants should have an interest in media and public policy, strong writing skills and an eye for detail. Experience with Microsoft Excel and social networking is required, and those pursuing a degree in journalism or communications are preferred.
The intern must be able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments on time and accurately. NWLC internships are unpaid; NWLC will work with students and their universities to provide college credit for the internship.
