The restaurant industry is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors of the US economy, but offers some of the nation’s lowest-wage jobs—especially for women. Two-thirds of tipped workers in the restaurant industry are women, and the federal cash minimum wage for tipped employees is just $2.13 an hour. In addition to poverty-level wages, women in the industry lack access to sick days and other benefits and face widespread sexual harassment.
