In response to a complaint filed by the National Women’s Law Center, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights found that girls in the Deer Valley Unified School District (AZ), the Wake County (NC) Public Schools, Columbus (OH) City Schools, the Houston Independent School District and the Irvine Unified School District (CA) are underrepresented in athletics programs.
In response to a complaint filed by the National Women’s Law Center, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights found that girls in the Deer Valley Unified School District (AZ), the Wake County (NC) Public Schools, Columbus (OH) City Schools, the Houston Independent School District and the Irvine Unified School District (CA) are underrepresented in athletics programs, with district-wide disparities of 11-15 percentage points between girls’ enrollment and the share of athletic participation opportunities provided to them. These gaps represent a total of 7,448 additional opportunities needed to level the playing field for female students. The five districts are required to add opportunities for girls based on the assessments in the upcoming school years.
