Amy K. Matsui, Senior Counsel and Director of Women and the Courts

Amy K. Matsui is Senior Counsel and Director of Women and the Courts at the National Women’s Law Center. She works on economic issues affecting low- and moderate-income women and families, with special emphasis on federal and state tax policy and women’s retirement security. Her work with retirement savings policy and federal and state tax credits for working families comprises policy analysis, federal advocacy, and public education and outreach. She also directs the Center's advocacy efforts around federal judicial nominations and diversity in the federal judiciary. Ms. Matsui has worked at the Center since 2002. Prior to joining the Center, Ms. Matsui practiced commercial law in the private sector. She clerked for the Honorable Carolyn Dineen King, then-Chief Judge of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, in 2000. She is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and Stanford Law School.

Former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is “disappointed” that some of her rulings have been dismantled by the Roberts Court. I think we’re thinking what she’s thinking.

Senator Kennedy's Legacy on the Judiciary Committee – Bork and Beyond

Senator Kennedy is rightly being remembered and celebrated for being a champion of legislation establishing and reinforcing civil rights protections for women during over four decades in the Senate.  But it should not be forgotten that he also worked to ensure that the protections set forth in legislation would not be given short shrift in the courtroom.

Justice Sotomayor Sworn in on Saturday

On Saturday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as the 111th Supreme Court Justice by Chief Justice John Roberts, at the Supreme Court.  She thus officially becomes the third woman, first Latina, and first woman of color to sit on the nation’s highest court.  She will hear her first argument as a Supreme Court Justice on September 9, in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.

Senate Set to Vote on Judge Sotomayor Today
