Danielle Garrett is a Health Policy Analyst for Health and Reproductive Rights. She has a B.A. from the College of William and Mary in Government and Women’s Studies and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Texas. She has worked in women’s health and reproductive rights advocacy since college with organizations such as Jane’s Due Process and NARAL Pro-Choice Texas. Danielle enjoys playing guitar, photography, eating seafood, and watching Longhorn football (Hook ‘em!). Once all Americans have access to affordable health care and women’s reproductive rights are secured, she plans to move to the Florida Keys and open a shrimp shack.

Just in case you needed more convincing that women’s health needs to be a national priority: A recent study out of the University of Washington found that in 737 U.S. Counties, women’s life expectancies declined over the past decade. You read that right.

The federal budget battles in Washington are heating up and we're hearing lots of talk about how Medicare is under attack, but not nearly as much about the threats to Medicaid. Currently, there are multiple, serious threats to the Medicaid program contained in extreme plans to lower the deficit and debt. We are therefore asking you to take a stand for Medicaid.

Medicaid and Medicare Provide Critical Support for the Long-Term Care Needs of Older Women

As our population ages, policy-makers and individual families are struggling to determine the best way of meeting the long-term care needs of elderly relatives and friends. Women are particularly affected by these public and private discussions because of their higher usage of long-term care services and the fact that they are more likely than men to be caretakers.
