Bloggers: Celebrate Forty Years of Women and Title IX with NWLC!

Posted by Danielle Jackson, Online Outreach Associate | Posted on: June 12, 2012 at 04:50 pm

Blog Carnival to Celebrate Title IXAre you ready? The 40th anniversary of Title IX is coming up fast, and we hope you’ll join us in commemorating the occasion! Forty years of breaking down barriers for women and girls is a spectacular achievement, and we want to mark this milestone and launch Title IX forward into its next 40 years and beyond. But we need your help!

Please join NWLC on Thursday, June 21 for a blog carnival to honor 40 years of Title IX! Whether you want to blog about the intricacies of the law or talk about a personal experience relating to it, we want to hear your story.

HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Participating in our blog carnival is easy! All you need to do is write a blog post (or more than one, if you’re so inclined!) reflecting on the importance of Title IX and let us know about it. Need some ideas to get your started writing? Maybe you could:

  • Share a story about you, your daughter, your niece, your cousin, or any girl you know who’s benefitted from Title IX in the classroom or on the playing field!
  • Did your mother, grandmother, aunt, or a family friend have trouble finding equal opportunity in her school before Title IX? Interview her and share her story – or if you went through any of these struggles, share your own story.
  • Or, blog about what advancements you hope will come in the future thanks to Title IX.

And remember: Title IX is about more than sports. Do you have a story about the science and technology fields, about school bullying and harassment, or about pregnant and/or parenting students? Title IX reaches all those issues – and we want to hear those stories, too!

NWLC’s Weekly Roundup: June 4 – 8

This has been quite a week! On Tuesday the Senate voted on the Paycheck Fairness Act (unfortunately opponents blocked the bill on a procedural vote) and on Thursday Judy Waxman, our VP of Health and Reproductive Rights, spoke on a panel at a White House town hall on women’s health. For your end-of-the-week reading we’ve got stories on new research on how emergency contraception works, a new book from ROC United, and an inspirational story of how teen athlete Meghan Vogel helped an opponent in need. Let’s get to it!

New research out this week shows that emergency contraception pills don’t work the way we think they do – and the way they really work should help squash some anti-abortion qualms about them.

NWLC’s Weekly Roundup: May 29 – June 1

Welcome to June! This week, we have stories on two girls (both under 10 years old) who have been making news for their smarts and spirit, and we also take a look at the next Disney/Pixar movie. Read on for more!

On Wednesday, Lori Anne Madison of Woodbridge, Virginia made National Spelling Bee history when she became the competition’s youngest-ever competitor at the ripe old age of six. She spells tough words at breakneck paces, isn’t fazed by being the Spelling Bee’s youngest entrant, and has been impressing the pants off of members of the media and blogosphere.

Unfortunately, Lori Anne was eliminated from the competition during Wednesday’s opening rounds, caught on the word “ingluvies.” But we’re sure she’ll be back next year, spelling words as fast as ever. (p.s. – In`glu´vi`es, n. (Anat.) The crop, or craw, of birds.)

Next up, we head to Scotland: for just over a month now, 9-year-old Martha Payne has been blogging about her school lunches with a little help from Dad over at NeverSeconds.

NWLC's Weekly Roundup: May 21 - 25

I’m sure you’re all anxious to get your Memorial Day weekend started, so this week we just have a few quick hits for you. Read on for stories on the latest product from Ruffles potato chips, “pink collar” jobs, and some dialogue about freedom of speech and pro-choice activism.

Oh, okay: Ruffles launches chips for men; 'Ultimate Chips & Dips' targeted specifically for male consumers.

I wasn't aware potato chips had become feminine, or that possessing a uterus/not being a dude made me incapable of enjoying Sweet & Smokin' BBQ flavored chips. But I'm sure these would go just great with some Dr. Pepper 10.
