Elizabeth Yates, Program Assistant

Elizabeth Yates joined NWLC in 2010 as the Program Assistant in the Education and Employment Program. Previously, Liz was as a Legal Assistant in the Family Law/Domestic Violence Unit at the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, where she worked directly with low-income women in the District.  Liz graduated from Tufts University with a major in International Relations and a minor in Latin American Studies in May of 2008. As a student, Liz completed internships at the Economic Opportunity Institute and at the Inter American Foundation.

Last week, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, AstraZeneca, settled a wage discrimination lawsuit by agreeing to pay $250,000 to 124 current and former female employees who, the Department of Labor claimed, were paid an average of $1,700 less than their male counterparts.

Forever 1921: Teen Clothing Retailer Tells "Pretty" Girls to Avoid Math

A few weeks ago, I was killing some time downtown and found myself at Forever 21. I had just begun to casually peruse the accessories aisle when something stopped me dead in my tracks: shark tooth necklaces. Seriously. Welcome back, 1989. Baywatch may be over, but the movement to bring beach accessories to the street is resurrected.

National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Enters Early Adolescence

Today is the tenth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Can you believe it's been ten years?

I can't. In fact, it seems like just yesterday that I was a shy fifteen-year-old, trapped between two friends in the backseat of my mother's Volvo, on the way to track practice, listening in stunned silence to the voice of an aging nun describe the importance of sexual abstinence.
