What You Need to Know about Today's Jobs Report

Most of what people noticed about today’s jobs data is that our economy is improving slowly. The numbers show that the economy added jobs last month and that the overall unemployment rate edged down. But our analysis shows that in this recovery, women continue to be left behind, and this month was no exception. Here are a few things that didn’t make the news but that you still need to know:

  • While the economy added 117,000 jobs last month, women lost 19,000. That means that every single additional job went to men, who gained 136,000 jobs in July. This continues the trend since the start of the recovery in June 2009, where women have lost 301,000 jobs while men gained 998,000 jobs.
  • Public sector job losses drove women’s overall job loss. Women lost 44,000 public sector jobs last month, accounting for all (and then some) of the 37,000 jobs lost in that sector in July. In contrast, men gained 7,000 public sector jobs last month. Women’s job losses in the public sector have been disproportionate throughout the recovery as well. While women made up 57 percent of the public sector workforce at the end of the recession, they lost 70 percent of the 523,000 jobs lost in this sector between June 2009 and July 2011.

A new study by Visions of Britain 2020 shows that more than half of UK women who are approximately mid-career believe that there will still be a significant wage gap in 2020. Women in the UK earn approximately 79 cents on the dollar of their male counterparts, but lag behind other European countries in narrowing the wage gap.

Two Years Into "Recovery," Data Show Still There’s Still No Recovery for Women

Posted by Jasmine Tucker, Fellow | Posted on: July 08, 2011 at 04:52 pm

Our analysis of today's jobs data shows that while our economy has seen some growth during the recovery, women have been excluded from any of the gains. In fact, while men suffered about 70 percent of the job losses in the recession, they have seen all of the job gains since the recovery started. Between June 2009 and June 2011, women have actually lost 281,000 jobs while men have gained 805,000. That's a staggering gap of nearly 1.1 million jobs.

Since the recovery started, men have recouped 15 percent of the jobs they lost during the recession while women lost an additional 13 percent of the jobs they lost during the recession. Heavy losses in the public sector disproportionately hit women and contributed to their dismal employment situation. Since the recovery started in June 2009, women lost 343,000 public sector jobs while men lost less than half that (losing 150,000 jobs). Private sector gains provided little relief to women, as they accounted for just six percent of the more than one million jobs added since June 2009.

Today’s jobs data show that the economic recovery slowed down dramatically in May.  The data show that for the previous three months, the economy has been gaining an average of 220,000 jobs each month but in May, added just 54,000 jobs.  For women, the picture was even more bleak:  they lost 1,000 jobs i

Unemployment Picture Worsens, Especially For Women of Color

Posted by Jasmine Tucker, Fellow | Posted on: May 06, 2011 at 04:38 pm

Today's jobs data show that while the economy keeps adding jobs, unemployment rates increased for everyone, particularly for women of color, and women continue to suffer from disproportionately small job gains in the recovery.
