Joan Entmacher

Joan Entmacher is Vice President for Family Economic Security at the National Women's Law Center, where she leads a team working to improve policies important to the economic security of low-income women and their families, including tax and budget, child care, child support, unemployment insurance, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, and Social Security. Ms. Entmacher is a leading expert on issues affecting low-income women. She has been invited to testify before Congress on several occasions, written numerous analyses and reports on income support policies and their impact on poor women, and spoken frequently at conferences, briefings, and to the media. Prior to joining the National Women's Law Center, Ms. Entmacher served as Director of Legal and Public Policy at the National Partnership for Women & Families, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Wellesley College, Chief of the Civil Rights Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, and attorney in the U.S. Department of Labor Solicitor's Office. Ms. Entmacher is a graduate of Yale Law School and Wellesley College.

400 Good Reasons Why Revenues Must Be on the Table

The IRS recently released data on the tax rates of the 400 highest-income taxpayers, and, once again, they show that when it comes to getting tax breaks, it pays to be really, really rich. In 2008, the "Fortunate 400" had an average adjusted gross income of over $270 million each. The minimum was about $110 million.

Trustees' Report: Women Can Count on Social Security

Today, the Social Security Board of Trustees released its annual report on Social Security's financial condition. It's a report of particular significance for women, because Social Security is women's security all across the country.

News That Small Business Owners Are Starting to Take Advantage of Health Care Law Benefits Is Good News for Women

We have previously pointed out the predicament of small businesses when it comes to health insurance coverage. Smaller firms have to pay more than larger ones for health insurance, making it harder for them to offer coverage.

Maybe That's Why They're Cutting the IRS Budget!

As we noted last week, the House Republicans' plan to cut $603 million from the IRS budget — costing the nation $4 billion in owed, uncollected taxes this year alone — is penny-wise and pound-foolish.
