Julie Vogtman, Senior Counsel

Julie Vogtman is Senior Counsel for the Family Economic Security Program at the National Women’s Law Center. She works on a range of issues involving economic support for low-income women and their families, including minimum wage policies, unemployment benefits, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). She also contributes to the Center’s work on federal budget and tax policies, including implementation of the tax credit components of the Affordable Care Act.  Prior to joining the Center, Ms. Vogtman was an associate with Covington & Burling LLP in Washington, DC. She is a graduate of Furman University and Georgetown University Law Center.

Women's Poverty Soared in 2009

The Census Bureau just released poverty data for 2009. As you might have guessed, it’s not a pretty picture: the overall poverty rate rose to 14.3 percent in the second full year of the recession, up from 13.2 percent in 2008.

Unemployment Among Single Mothers Remains at Highest Rate in Over 25 Years

The August jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics unfortunately showed that the July spike in unemployment among women who maintain families was not a temporary blip.

New House Bill Would Extend Crucial Emergency Fund

Dear Senators: Thanks for extending UI. Now how about a job?

Yesterday the Senate passed a bill to extend unemployment benefits for approximately 2.5 million people who are unemployed and looking for work. This is an important and long overdue measure to help Americans who have been out of work for more than 26 weeks, but the underlying problem remains: there are simply not enough jobs to go around.
