Val Vilott, Outreach Associate

Val Vilott is the Outreach Associate for Family Economic Security, Education and Employment. Prior to joining the Center, Ms. Vilott worked as a National Campus Organizer at the Feminist Majority Foundation and held internships with the Center for Health and Gender Equity and the Institute for Women's Policy Research. She graduated with honors from the George Washington University in 2008, where she studied International Affairs and Women's Studies. Outside of the office, Ms. Vilott enjoys photography, baking, and sharing factoids about her home state of Oklahoma (home of the shopping cart and parking meter).

Keeping Schools Safe: More Than Fire Drills and Crossing Guards

All through elementary and secondary school, my public schools put a lot of emphasis on safety. We had fire and tornado drills every quarter, we weren’t allowed to cross streets without the crossing guards, and we had to use those awful safety scissors that barely cut anything for years and years (”you could poke someone’s eye out!”)

Happy Mother's Day from The Kid That Does Everything

I have a confession to make: growing up, I was That Kid. The one that does EVERYTHING. Softball, dance, debate, girl scouts, shotput, band. You name it, I did it.

I have another confession to make: my doing all of those things has little to do with my own skill. Rather, my success as a child and as an adult speaks more to the talent, love, and perseverance of my mother.

Taking to the Streets for Equal Pay

There's a few ways to get things done here in Washington. Sometimes we send messages. Sometimes we call the Capitol. Sometimes we publish an op-ed. Sometimes we even blog!

But if calling, writing, or publishing isn't quite doing it for us, we try something different. We take to the streets.

Milwaukee Stays Strong on Paid Sick Leave... For Now, Anyway

We've heard a lot about goings-on in Wisconsin lately, haven’t we? Well, I have some good news to share from the Badger State! On Thursday, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals lifted an injunction against Milwaukee's paid sick leave law.
