Val Vilott, Outreach Associate

Val Vilott is the Outreach Associate for Family Economic Security, Education and Employment. Prior to joining the Center, Ms. Vilott worked as a National Campus Organizer at the Feminist Majority Foundation and held internships with the Center for Health and Gender Equity and the Institute for Women's Policy Research. She graduated with honors from the George Washington University in 2008, where she studied International Affairs and Women's Studies. Outside of the office, Ms. Vilott enjoys photography, baking, and sharing factoids about her home state of Oklahoma (home of the shopping cart and parking meter).

Before my time at NWLC, I worked as a Campus Organizer, organizing student feminist groups across the country. A joke among my fellow organizers was that in a lot of ways, we doubled as impromptu therapists for the students that we worked with. Over two years, I cheered them on and heard about their triumphs, but also heard about the struggles they faced on campus.

Every Day is Labor Day

This weekend is Labor Day weekend, and families will be headed to the beach, firing up their barbecues, and packing up the car for road trips across the country in celebration.

But, though I’m sure we’ll all enjoy the long weekend, it’s tough to feel celebratory when nearly half of the workforce we’re celebrating is still subject to wage discrimination based on gender.

Plan Ahead: What Women Need to Know About Retirement Security

It’s not easy to save for retirement when you’re trying to stay afloat in today’s economy. But if you ever want to retire with some level of security, you need to start planning now.

For women, planning for retirement is even more important: women have lower average lifetime earnings, a longer average lifespan than men, and about one in five elderly single women is poor.
