Coaches, You Can Make a Difference!

  • Are you a coach who sees ways in which a girls' team is being treated worse than a boys' team? For example, does your team not have equipment that is equal to what boys' teams have? Are your practice or game facilities not comparable? Are there not enough opportunities for girls to play sports at your school?

  • If so, you can do something. Here are just a few ideas:

    • Use the resources of this website to check out your school and identify where there are Title IX problems.
    • Investigate. As a coach, you probably have access to information about athletics budgets or policies that students and parents may not.
    • Talk to other coaches or teachers.
    • Talk to the school athletic director or the principal.
    • Find out who is the Title IX coordinator at your school.
    • Engage parents.
    • Get in touch with organizations, like the sponsors of this site, who can help you.
    • Contact your school board or your state or county representatives.
    • Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
    • Get a reporter interested in writing a story about the problem.
    • File a complaint with the Office For Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education to protest the inequities.
    • Talk to an attorney about your right to proceed in court.
