June 13, 2013

3:00 pm Eastern

1. Welcome & Introductions

 Introduction and review of agenda

  • Dania Palanker, Senior Counsel, National Women’s Law Center

2. Getting the Coverage You Deserve: New Toolkit for Preventive Services

The National Women’s Law Center recently released a new resource, Getting the Coverage You Deserve: What to Do If You Are Charged a Co-Pay or Deductible for a Preventive Service.  The toolkit provides information on the coverage of preventive services in the health care law, information on how to find out if a plan is currently covering these services, and detailed instructions on how to appeal to an insurance company if it is not, including draft letters to the insurance company.  We will walk through the toolkit and discuss how you can use the resource to help women receive preventive services without cost sharing.

  • Mara K. Gandal-Powers, Legal Fellow, Health and Reproductive Rights, National Women’s Law Center

3. Preventive Services and Cancer

Many cancer screenings are preventive services under Section 2713 of the Affordable Care Act and therefore must be covered without cost sharing under new health plans.  We are joined on today’s call with two experts working to make sure individuals receive cancer prevention and cancer treatment.  They will talk about issues patients are facing, such as when an individual is high risk and how that interacts with USPSTF recommendations and cost-sharing.

  • Mary Doroshenk, Director, National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable
  • Erin Reidy, Associate Director of Policy, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network

4. Pediatric Preventive Services

Pediatricians are on the front line providing preventive services to patients, including important services to adolescents and young women and screenings such as maternal depression screening.  Robert Hall, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, will join the call to talk about the pediatric services covered under Section 2713, how clinicians’ are providing the services and patient experience.

  • Robert Hall, Associate Director, Department of Federal Affairs of the American Academy of Pediatrics

5. Section 1557 Complaints

Last week, the National Women’s Law Center filed sex discrimination complaints against five institutions that exclude pregnancy coverage from the health insurance benefits provided to their employees’ dependent children. These complaints, believed to be the first to challenge dependent pregnancy coverage exclusions under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), were filed with the Office for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The ACA is the first federal law to bar sex discrimination in health care programs that receive federal funds.

  • Hillary Schneller, Equal Justice Works Fellow, National Women’s Law Center
