The National Women’s Law Center filed comments with the Census Bureau and the Department of Commerce regarding a proposal to reduce the frequency with which questions pertaining to marital status were asked on the American Community Survey. Annually asking these questions is crucial for research on key issues for women, including the disparate impact of voter identification laws on women, and how changes in marital status affect retirement security and eligibility for premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act.
