Featured Action: Pregnant and Parenting Students Need a Senate Champion

The Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act is already pending in the House (H.R. 2617), but we need a Senator to step up to the plate and introduce it in the Senate. Will one of your Senators be the champion we are looking for?

Take action today by asking your Senators to become a lead sponsor of the Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act. Pregnant and parenting students have a lot on the line. They need to know that their Senators are supporting them.

The Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act (PPSAE) would provide a framework and resources to states and school districts to ensure that pregnant and parenting students have equal access to educational opportunities. It would enable states to create a plan for the education of pregnant and parenting students, provide professional development and technical assistance to school districts, coordinate services with other state agencies, and disseminate information, among other activities.

I strongly urge you to introduce the Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education (PPSAE) Act (currently pending in the House as H.R. 2617) in the Senate, to help improve graduation rates among secondary school students who are expecting or parenting children.

Nearly 3 in 10 girls in the U.S. get pregnant at least once before age 20. This important legislation will provide states and local school districts with resources to establish policies and practices that help pregnant and parenting youth stay in school and graduate college or career ready.</p>
<p>Only about one-half of teen mothers earn a high school diploma by age 22, as compared to 89% of their peers who do not parent children as teens. This pattern -- a result of the many barriers pregnant and parenting students face, including discrimination by their schools -- has severe short- and long-term consequences for the economic success and well-being of these students, their families, their communities, and our nation. This is particularly true because the children of teen parents who do not finish school are more likely to drop out themselves.</p>
<p>The PPSAE Act will enable states to provide professional development and technical assistance to school districts, so that these districts can provide academic and related services to pregnant and parenting teens and encourage them to continue their education instead of stigmatizing them and pushing them out of school.

Again, please improve the educational outcomes and future economic security of pregnant and parenting students -- and their children -- by championing the Pregnant and Parenting Students Access to Education Act.
