Why Women Should Vote (Overview)
Why Women Should Vote - To Ensure Everyone a Good Education
Getting a good education is the key to economic success, and it’s especially important for women trying to move into well-paying fields traditionally dominated by men. But our leaders aren’t making education enough of a priority.
Funding for schools and student loans is being cut
While millionaires have been getting tax cuts, Congress has been slashing funds for education programs
This year, Congress passed a law that will cut federal student loan programs by $12.7 billion over 5 years — the largest cut in the history of these programs
Pell Grants, which help low-income students pay for college, covered 72% of college costs in 1976. Now, because Congress and the Administration have refused to keep up the funding with the rising cost of college, Pell Grants cover only 35% of college costs
No Child Left Behind programs are woefully underfunded, forcing school districts to make up the gap by cutting other programs in local schools
The President’s budget proposes additional education cuts of 29% for next year
A college education is especially important to close the wage gap between men and women.
Women with a high school diploma earn only 75% of what men with a high school diploma earn. But women who have recently graduated from college have been able to cut that differential by a third, making 83% of what recent male college graduates earn.
Programs that help women succeed are being attacked.
The U.S. Departments of Justice and Education have worked to gut programs that help women who choose to pursue higher education in math and science, even though women still earn far fewer degrees than men in engineering and computer science.
The U.S. Department of Education has adopted policies that could roll back decades of gains for women in intercollegiate athletics under Title IX.
