Why Women Should Vote (Overview)
Why Women Should Vote - To Make Sure Our Government Focusses on the Things that Matter Most
Here is where our leaders in Washington have been putting their priorities lately:
Lavishing tax cuts on the wealthy and powerful few
The tax cut that Congress passed this year gives millionaires an average tax cut of $43,000 but gives the overwhelming majority of American households only $31 or less
When they filed their tax returns last year, almost a quarter of single-mother families got nothing at all from the tax cuts passed over the last five years
Slashing funds for women’s priorities
At the same time millionaires have been getting tax cuts, Congress has been slashing funds for many things women rely on, like student loans, Medicaid, child support enforcement, and educational and training programs that help women move to higher-paying jobs.
Instead of making the recent tax cuts permanent for the top 1% of taxpayers, that same amount of money could close the long-term shortfall in Social Security.
The tax cuts for millionaires in 2004 could have paid for more than 10 million child care subsidies. Meanwhile, 250,000 children have lost child care funding since 2000 and that number is climbing.
The money used for recent tax cuts for the top 1% of households – a group making an average of $1 million a year – will, when the cuts are fully in effect in 2010, add up to about the total federal funding for education as proposed in the President’s budget.
