The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice—in the courts, in public policy, and in our society.
Partner on a Case or Brief
The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) encourages attorneys and organizations to reach out to us about possible collaboration on litigation, including direct representation and amicus curiae briefs.
Our litigation practice focuses on matters involving reproductive rights, access to health care, and gender justice at work and in schools. We generally take on matters with the potential to impact the law more broadly and substantially improve the equity, health, and/or economic security of women, girls, and all who are harmed by sex discrimination or denials of health care.
Due to limited capacity, NWLC is not able to take on every co-counseling or amicus request. Here are some considerations to keep in mind to increase the chance NWLC can help:
- The sooner you contact NWLC about your case, the better. Don’t wait until you have a briefing schedule or other deadline—the earlier we learn about the case the more opportunity we have to plan.
- If you do have filing deadlines in your case, NWLC generally needs a minimum of 1-2 months’ notice before the due date to consider participation. The more assistance you’re requesting (e.g., drafting an amicus brief from scratch vs. signing onto an existing brief), the more lead time we need.
- For amicus briefs, as a general rule, NWLC prioritizes cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the federal courts of appeals, and state supreme courts. This is not to say that we never participate in amicus briefing in other courts, but cases outside these jurisdictions are unlikely to be a top priority for us.
